What is Light Chasing?

Light chasing is a systematic method to solve any Lights Out puzzle. It works by processing the board row by row from top to bottom.

How to Chase:

1. Start with row 2 (second row from top)

2. For each lit light in row 1, press the button directly below it in row 2

3. This will turn off the lit light in row 1

4. Continue this process for rows 2→3, 3→4, and 4→5

5. After chasing through row 4, only row 5 (bottom) may have lights on

Solving Row 5:

6. Look at which lights are on in row 5

7. Use the Lookup Table to find which buttons in row 1 to press

8. Press those row 1 buttons, then chase again from top to bottom

9. The entire board will be solved!

Why does this work?

Lights Out is based on linear algebra over GF(2). The light chasing method systematically eliminates possibilities until finding the unique solution that clears the board.
